What Matters Most – Are We Looking Out? – Luke 15 – Ps. Brendan Devine – 6pm Service
Series: 2018
Christianity is all about us becoming more like Jesus. The term literally means “little Christ’s”. But for many of us we have missed what that looks like. We easily get caught up in the pursuit of self-righteousness, and holiness, forgetting that true holiness lies at the center of God’s heart. A heart for others. A heart on the lookout. A heart that wants to find what was lost. Being like Jesus leads to a pursuit of the lost.

We often think coming to church, praying, singing songs is something we do for God. Many times, people are having a rough time and come to church to barter with God. If I do this, you do this. However, God is clear it isn’t songs, or prayers, or performances, it is what we do for others Monday to Saturday that is for Him.

Money is an essential part of everyday life. Our confidence and our sense security often comes from how much money we "own", and often our biggest stressors are how and where it should be spent. Jesus makes it clear that if we try to "own" money, it "owns" us. Money quickly becomes our God, and we worship it so easily. Instead we need to recognise who owns the money, and who owns us. It's only then that we can truly follow the King without a coin.

Like Bartimaeus we have a problem. Rather than living out the life God intends for us, we are sidelined by our blind spots. We live our lives on the side of the highway watching everything pass by, wishing and comparing with what we don't have, comforting ourselves in our misery. Jesus calls us out to a different life, one that leaves behind the coats of comfort and enables us to see everything differently.
